South wall of Großer Buchstein
General Information
The route describes the access to the climbing route! An alpine climbing route, which can be looked up in detail in the climbing guide "Xeis Auslese" by Andreas Hollinger and Jürgen Reinmüller!
From Gstatterboden near the Ennsbrücke (railway crossing) follow the well-marked trail. Crossing several times over goods roads, you finally reach the Buchsteinhaus via serpentines. Continue on the normal route in the direction of Großer Buchstein. About 20 minutes after the hut, a small path branches off to the right (east) to a boulder with several signs. For all routes except the west ridge, turn right, first horizontally across, then after a dwarf pines climb moderately downhill and crossing some gorges, you reach a meadow slope to the left (west) of the last big gorge leading to the entrances. Climb straight up the meadow slope, keeping right over a steep step (2-) and cross horizontally to the right into the big gorge. From here to the entrances of the individual routes, see topo!
Total walking time from Gstatterboden about 3 hours to 3½
The Buchsteinhaus can also be reached from the ÖBB stop Johnsbach, near the inn "Zur Bachbrücke". Turn right (east) at the bus stop and you will reach the "Rauchbodenweg", which you follow for a few minutes, then turn left and use a small path marked with blue dots, which leads into the path described above. Walking time also 3 to 3½ hrs. There is also the possibility to climb from the north, from the former Gasthaus Eisenzieher near St. Gallen. Walking time about 4½ hrs. The west ridge can be reached by following the marked hiking trail to the start of the via ferrata "Südwandband".
