Access to Großer Ödstein (Ödsteinkar)
General Information
The route describes the access to the climbing route! An alpine climbing route, which can be looked up in detail in the climbing guide "Xeis Auslese" by Andreas Hollinger and Jürgen Reinmüller!
One branches off the Gesäusebundesstraße (B146) in the direction of Johnsbach and after about 2 km one reaches a narrow section of the valley (right above the brook climbing garden). Here (GPS 1, 626m) a forest road branches off to the left and the marked path to the Haindlkarhütte
over the Gsenscharte. Park your car here - walk along the forest road for a few metres until another forest road branches off to the right. This leads to a game gate (GPS 2, yellow signpost "Zustieg Ödsteinkante"). The game gate can be bypassed on the right by a spur path. After about 300 metres you reach a stream bed, which you follow until you reach a forest road at a higher level. Now left of the creek bed (right of the gate fence) on a narrow, moderately marked path into the forest. Follow the steep path, partly over brooks, mountain pine fields and finally over a large debris field into the Ödsteinkar. Beware! Do not lose the markings, do not follow any traces of wild climbing. Now into the large rubble chute between Großer Ödstein and Ödsteinkarturm (mostly snow residue). The entrances to "Ödsteinkante" and "The Beauty and the Beast" route are in the upper third of the rubble chute.
Walking time 2½ up to 3 hours
The alternative access from the Haindlkarhütte is in very bad condition due to small debris flows and is therefore no longer recommended!
