Since 2003 the springs of the Gesäuse National Park have been recorded in various projects. On the occasion of the "Spring Weeks", which took place between 2007 and 2010, the Gesäuse National Park GmbH invited internationally renowned specialists to conduct scientific research on the 642 springs in the area.
Among the 1,050 animal and plant species found, 116 were first discovered in Austria. With seven animal species that represent sensational new discoveries for science, the particularly high significance of the spring biotopes for regional biodiversity was impressively confirmed.
