History Museum

Graz

A journey through time in Styria – from the Middle Ages to the digital present.

The Museum für Geschichte (museum of history) is located in the Palais Herberstein on Graz's Sackstraße, one of the most significant architectural monuments of the old town. Here, the architecture of the baroque representative building meets a contemporary museum presentation, showcasing the cultural history of Styria from the High Middle Ages to the present day.

A special highlight is the Schaudepot, which provides insights into the cultural-historical collection with around 35,000 objects. Musical instruments, furniture, fashion, monstrances, orders, or grave crosses document the diversity of historical everyday and festive culture. In addition, the multimedia collections preserve over 2.5 million photos, films, and audio recordings that trace the development of Styria into the digital era.

Barrier-free access, an elevator, as well as offers in easy language and audio guides make the museum accessible for persons with mobility impairments.

In this way, the Palais Herberstein connects historical spaces with contemporary forms of knowledge transfer, making the cultural identity of Styria impressively tangible.
