At the Schauspielhaus Graz, the farce "Frühere Verhältnisse – From Now On It Went Downhill" by Johann Nestroy premieres on March 20, 2026. Directed by Ruth Brauer-Kvam with Graz musician deeLinde. The production combines Nestroy's old Viennese language and social comedy with songs by Hildegard Knef and presents the theme of rise and fall in an unusual way.
The wealthy wood trader Scheitermann and his wife Josephine are looking for new servants. Peppi Amsel, who previously worked for Josephine's father, is quickly hired. The second applicant, Anton Muffl, knows a dark secret — Scheitermann's previous relationships are less glamorous than he pretends. Nestroy exposes the hypocrisy of his characters, who hide their past to appear better in the social fabric.
The musical intertwining with Knef songs underscores the contrast between appearance and reality – social etiquette meets genuine emotion. After the rise, the fall threatens: from now on, it went downhill!
