Augustinian Canons' Monastery Vorau

The Stift Vorau presents itself as a unified Baroque monastery, which attempts to combine the more than 800-year tradition of monastic life with the demands of the present in the church and the world. The Vorau monastery church is among the most magnificent Baroque churches in Styria, due to its lavish fresco abundance, the abundant gilding of all wooden sculptures, and especially the glorious decoration of the high altar. This mighty hall with a ring of chapels on both sides was completely reconstructed by Provost Matthias Singer after the demolition of the old Gothic basilica according to plans by Domenico Sciassia, while retaining the towers 1660-1662. The imposing high altar, built in 1704 based on a brilliant design by Matthias Steindl, is the artistic highlight of the church. It is also the source of the pulpit, completed in 1706 and much admired.
