The Lugauer in the Gesäuse is one of the most popular destinations for ski mountaineers in eastern Austria. In very good conditions, the Lugauerplan offers a 600-metre steep descent back to Haselkar.
The Lugauer got its nickname "Styrian Matterhorn" because of its peculiar shape, which is reminiscent of its big brother in Switzerland. Both the ascent and descent bypass and circle around the Haselkogel. This area is one of the last grouse habitats in Europe. Therefore, please avoid the old route over the Haselkogel at all costs. With good winter markings, this is also easy to do in this case.

More information
From the car park, we follow the forest road through a gorge, where a hairpin bend to the east awaits us. Via the Karl-Gollmaier-Weg trail, which is marked for winter use, we pass the Pfarralm, Schröckalm and Neuburgalm huts on our way to Hüpfingerhals, where we follow another winter trail marker, which will be our constant companion.
We continue uphill via Hüpfingerhals and then descend briefly to Wirtsalm. Via Heaselkar, we then reach the foot of Lugauerplan. The further ascent leads us over this large western flank to the pre-summit, where a ski depot awaits us. A short, narrow, exposed and sometimes tricky ridge leads to the main summit with its imposing summit cross. The descent follows the ascent route. Please note the winter markings!
