A tour in the heart of the Gesäuse certainly has its special charms, as this area in northern Styria is known for its breathtakingly beautiful, inaccessible landscape.
Since the early days of mountaineering, the name Gesäuse has been synonymous with unique nature experiences for hikers, climbers and ski mountaineers. Over millions of years, the Enns river has carved its way deep into these mountains, creating a breakthrough valley with steep walls towering up to 1,800 metres.

More information
We first head north on a forest road and after about 500 metres, at a signpost for Kreuzmauer, we turn right into the Volkernotgraben. We now climb uphill in hairpin bends to reach another forest road. Here we pass through two tunnels to the end of the road where the trench splits.
From here, we turn left and climb the ditch, which is overgrown with bushes, before making a wide arc to the north-west to reach the wide, beautiful Südkar. Below the Kreuzmauer, we turn right and climb up a ridge to the rocky summit (ski depot!). Note: Please only ascend to the summit on skis in very good conditions. It should also be noted that the steep descent from the summit is only suitable for experienced ski tourers. The descent follows the ascent route.
