From the signboard across the forecourt to the ridge edge, around it onto a large scree terrace. Diagonally upward to a deep rock shaft. Steeply upward and to the right to a protruding ledge with a faint notch. Exposed traverse for 20 meters to a prominent rock spike. Continue upward on a wide, stepped ledge beneath an overhanging, dark wall and onward to a ledge at the "South Pillar" (center of the wall). Descend 20 meters down a stepped gully into a wall recess. From there, diagonally up to the right and continue along the wall on a faint ledge upward to a small head beneath an overhanging edge. Ascend the following gully to a large ledge and continue toward the exit. Cross the summit ridge to the nearby peak (2224 m).

Or via Leoben, Vordernberg and Eisenerz to Hieflau and from there via the B146 westwards into the Gesäuse to Gstatterboden.
Take the A1 Westautobahn motorway to the Ybbs exit and from there head south through Scheibbs, Lunz am See, Göstling an der Ybbs and Palfau to Hieflau. From there, take the B146 westwards into the Gesäuse to Gstatterboden.
The via ferrata climber can expect an imposing wall climb with magnificent views along a diagonally running band system. Apart from easy walking passages, the via ferrata is secured throughout with steel ropes. No ladders or clamps.
Height difference 250m. Walking time from the entrance 1,5 h. From the exit it takes another 10 minutes to reach the summit of Gr. Buchstein.
