He grew up on his parents' mountain farm (Kunagrünberg near Pruggern in the Enns Valley). He spent the first decades of his life there, then lived in Aich and, since 2005, in Vienna. He trained as a marketing specialist and worked as such until the mid-1990s. He also wrote his first literary works (poetry, nature features, legends, fairy tales, essays, contributions to anthologies and photo books and literary magazines, and theater projects with amateur theater ensembles).
Since 1996, Gruber has spent half the year working as a shepherd on an alpine pasture in the Dachstein Mountains, where he writes his novels, which primarily focus on his local environment and are primarily dedicated to the history of the Dachstein Mountains. Since 2005, Gruber has lived in Vienna as a freelance writer and occasional copywriter.
