St. Barbara Church – Hundertwasser Bärnbach
Bärnbach
Where architecture becomes art and colors open spiritual spaces.
The St. Barbara Church in Bärnbach is a unique testament to modern sacred art and is considered one of the most fascinating sights in Styria. Built between 1948 and 1950, it received a completely new face in 1987/88 by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The visionary artist transformed the simple architecture into a colorful total work of art with strong symbolism.
Characteristic are the golden onion dome, the colorful tiled roof, ceramic mosaics, and colored plaster surfaces. Rounded building edges and a deliberately irregular walking surface surround the church. Twelve prominent arches bear the symbols of the major world religions – a strong sign of tolerance, dialogue, and ecumenical togetherness. The simply designed interior conveys tranquility and invites prayer. Works by regional artists integrate into the overall concept, with Hundertwasser's own works in the altar niche and at the baptismal font being particularly impressive.
This church is not a museum-like place, but a lived expression of diversity, spirituality, and artistic freedom. An inspiring destination in the Graz Region that uniquely combines art, religion, and imagination.
