Parish church of St James with chancel

Geistthal-Södingberg

Between heaven and hills: a station for pilgrims and culture lovers.

The parish church of St. James the Elder in Geistthal-Södingberg was first mentioned in 1245 and today presents itself as a late Gothic structure with an elevated choir, a three-story west tower, and rich historical substance. Notable are the profiled portals, stepped buttresses, and several Roman inscribed stones.

Inside, the ribbed vault, a three-aisled gallery with a baroque balustrade, and brightly colored altars from the 18th century make a strong impression. The pulpit with the figure of the Good Shepherd and several angel figures come from Balthasar Prandtstätter. The organ (1727) and a late Gothic crucifix complement the furnishings, as well as an octagonal baptismal font with a baroque superstructure. The ensemble includes a Romanesque ossuary with a gothic apse and a crucifixion group by Prandtstätter.

Through extensive restorations since the second half of the 20th century, this culturally and historically significant building has been preserved and today also serves as an attractive destination for those seeking peace and culture enthusiasts.
