Old Kainach Castle
Bärnbach
Renaissance jewel with a historic arcade facade and a quiet park backdrop.
Schloss Alt-Kainach is located north of Bärnbach in the Voitsberg district and is one of the most impressive Renaissance buildings in the Graz experience region. Originally mentioned as a manorial farm in the 12th century, it was expanded into a fortified complex in the 14th century. In its current form, the castle emerged around 1540 with a distinctive hipped roof, two corner towers, and a rare arcade facade that is considered one of the architectural highlights of Austria.
The historical significance dates back to the 17th century when the castle was used for isolation during a plague epidemic. Today, it houses the Burgenkundliche Museum, which has documented the history of Styrian castles since 1972 through models, drawings, and a special exhibition on the topic "Around the Holy Mountain." Guided tours are available from early May to the end of October between 08:00 and 18:00 by prior telephone arrangement.
The ensemble of the castle building and the tranquil park offers an atmospheric experience between architecture, culture, and nature. The location amidst forests and meadows gives the place a special aura. Schloss Alt-Kainach is also used as a venue for events, such as civil weddings or musical events.
