Holy Mountain

Bärnbach

A place of silence, history, and a distant view in the heart of the Lipizzaner homeland.

High above Bärnbach stands the Holy Mountain – a place that uniquely combines nature, history, and spiritual depth. Inhabited since the Bronze Age and later revered as "mons sacer," it remains an important site with a special aura to this day. In the 17th century, a baroque church was built here, donated by Countess Eleonora von Wagensperg.

Around 1730, the complex on the Holy Mountain was completed with four chapels and a crucifixion group at the summit. There, an impressive panorama unfolds over the Kainach Valley and the home of the Lipizzaners, stretching far into Western Styria.

As a tranquil retreat, spiritual center, or cultural highlight, the Holy Mountain attracts many visitors from the region and beyond. Those who immerse themselves in the special atmosphere quickly feel why this place has been considered sacred for centuries. An impressive stop on any exploration journey in the Graz Region.
