Three sailors in the big city: "On the Town" as a musical with charm & wit
Starting in autumn 2025, Oper Graz presents On the Town, a lively musical by Leonard Bernstein from 1944. The story follows three sailors—Gabey, Chip, and Ozzie—on a 24-hour shore leave in New York City. What unfolds is a whirlwind urban adventure filled with music, encounters, and surprises.
The performance is staged in both German and English, with German surtitles. The production is directed by Felix Seiler, with choreography by Danny Costello, set design by Darko Petrovic, and costumes by Sarah Rolke.
Bernstein’s music blends jazz, Broadway flair, and classical orchestration—playful, catchy, and full of life. The songs and scenes are vibrant, the characters charming, and the pace fast.
“On the Town” captures New York as a city of dreams and coincidences—and celebrates life itself. The Graz production brings humor, emotion, and dance-driven energy to the stage.
