The leisurely trail around the slag heap in Fohnsdorf in the Murtal adventure region combines the history of mining with a hike in a soothing natural area near the town.

True to the motto "good things are often so close", you should take a look at the nature-history nature trail in Fohnsdorf in the Murtal adventure region. The town is inevitably associated with the history of mining, so many guests and locals are familiar with the mining museum in Fohnsdorf. What is rather little known is that there is a wonderful recreational area directly behind the museum. The nature-history nature trail will surprise many a hiker, as one would not expect this idyllic wasteland. You walk comfortably on well-kept paths through the forest, encountering numerous information boards, resting places and natural wetlands. It is quiet here and after a short time you are visually, acoustically, but above all mentally far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The trail is also very suitable for children, as the educational panels explain the local flora and fauna in a way that is suitable for children.

From St. Michael in Upper Styria via the Murtal expressway S36 (vignette required) to the exit "Zeltweg-West". Then via Aichdorf to Fohnsdorf (36 km, approx. 25 minutes).

From Judenburg via the Murtal expressway S36 (vignette required) to the exit "Judenburg-Ost" and then to Fohnsdorf (10 km, approx. 15 minutes).

We start at the main square of Fohnsdorf (1), 736 m, and walk south along Judenburger Straße. It goes about 1 km straight ahead until we see the turnoff to the mining museum, where an asphalt road leads to the entrance of the museum on the left. Here is the start (2), 719 m, of the nature-history nature trail. We pass the buildings and mining relics on the left and orient ourselves by the signs of the theme trail. The first part of the themed trail virtually circles the former site, with several display boards providing information about the mining history of the town of Fohnsdorf. The further course leads along forest edge paths and on idyllic trails through the forest. We pass by ponds, which offer very comfortable resting possibilities. Finally, the trail passes a fish pond (3), 714 m, where we have a beautiful view of the Seetaler Alps. Via a forest path we come directly to the road, which we follow to the right into the center of Fohnsdorf.

No time limit and free parking at the stadium in Fohnsdorf. The parking lot (in the country road at the eastern end of the town in the direction of Rattenberg) is only a 5-minute walk from the main square.
