Lawinenlage must be carefully observed.
The approximately 15.7 km long ski tour to the Große Tragl
with summit crossing and “Geisterwald descent” is one of the more demanding
tours on the Tauplitzalm. It takes about 5½ hours and requires technical skill,
alpine experience, and good physical fitness.
The ascent leads from the parking area on the Tauplitzalm across the
wide alpine plateau, past the „Steirersee huts“, and further over the Traglhals
to the summit at 2,179 m. The descent runs through the “Geisterwald” (Ghost
Forest) and over the Haberboden down to the Ödernalm, before returning
to the Tauplitzalm.
The tour offers impressive views of the Totes Gebirge and varied terrain with traverses and forest passages. Since some slopes can be prone to avalanches, careful tour planning and attention to Lawinenlage is essential.

A ten-kilometer toll road leads from Bad Mitterndorf to the Tauplitzalm.
First past the Hollhaus and across the alpine plateau in an easterly direction. Shortly before the Steirersee there is the first short descent towards the Steirerseehütten.
Now keep left uphill over the so-called "Steirerseeleiten" and along the eastern walls of Sturzhahn, Kleinen and Großen Tragl. Following the winter markings, up to the Traglhals, where you keep left to reach the summit of the Großer Tragl.
Downhill - variant easy: along the ascent path to the Steirerseehütten and climb back up to the Tauplitzalm.
Downhill - variant difficult: ghost forest descent to the Ödernalm and return ascent to the Tauplitzalm.
From the summit of the Großer Tragl northward into a saddle, now westward into the trench of the "Haberboden" down to about 1900 meters (do not descend further!).
Keep as high as possible to the left along the rock faces, depending on the snow conditions, climb 30 to 50 meters in altitude (possibly briefly swell again) to the Grasslrücken! Very steep entry into the Langkar, and in an impressive drive along the northern rock faces of Sturzhahn and Traweng to the "Geisterwald"(large boulders).
At the alpine huts of the Ödernalm begins the climb back to the Tauplitzalm.
